EVENT OVERVIEW: The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay is an international event. The Olympic Flame is lit in Greece and flown to the United States via special arrangements. The Torch Relay begins December 4, 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia, the last place the Olympic Flame rested on US soil. The Olympic Flame will travel more than 13,500 miles and pass through 46 states in 65 days. In addition to Torchbearers, the Olympic Flame will be transported by automobile, airplane, train, ship, skier, horse-drawn sleigh, snowmobile, ice skater, covered wagon and other unique modes of transportation. The route has been designed to showcase as much of America as possible within the timeframe allotted to conduct the relay. The Torch Relay ends on February 8, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. ROLE OF TORCHBEARERS: 7,200 inspirational individuals will have the honor of carrying the Olympic Flame in the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay.
